Floods in Bangladesh: A Comparative Hydrological Investigation on Two Catastrophic Events
نویسنده
چکیده
Flood becomes regular feature in riverrine Bangladesh. Every year, around 21 percent of land is flooded during monsoon season, however, in severe situation this figure shot up to more than 60 percent of total land. This paper is an attempt to analyze hydrological characteristics of two catastrophic events (1988 and 1998 flood) in the light of flood history in Bangladesh. The analysis demonstrates that the 1998 flood was more severe than the 1988 one. Moreover, the 1998 flood was also prolonged than the 1988 flood due to heavy rainfall inside and outside of the country. Finally, flood management issues in Bangladesh have been analyzed and found that structural solution to mitigate flood is not the only solution. Based on the analysis some possible mitigation options are put forward.

In the summer of 2001, an intense thunderstorm in southeastern Caspian Sea triggered a catastrophic flood in the Madarsoo basin . Use of methods including high-resolution aerial photographs and satellite images interpretation, multi-date mapping, hydraulic calculations and field observations made possible the documentation of the geomorphic impacts on the Madarsoo River and its tributaries. The Moravian floods in July 1997 have killed 49 people, affected 536 settlements, 29 000 houses and cost over 2.5 billion USD. A question arises whether the hydrological event (or the preceding meteorological one) can be predicted. In order to foresee the magnitude of catastrophic events we extrapolate historical data which has an impact on the construction in the vicinity of the rivers, insura...

In many floods controlling, watershed-management and water-resources projects, estimating of river flow-rate is important and needs a comprehensive hydrological modeling of flow-rate evaluation. Need for enlightening the status of water-resources and precipitation in different watersheds and the lack of networks of hydro-meteorological gauging stations, reveal the importance of estimating ...
